RICHLAND, Wash. -- Hanford Vit Plant workers say they have reached a pivotal point. Friday they lifted a 120,000 pound crane into the Pretreatment facility. It's the largest crane in any Vit Plant facility.
It will be used inside the 400-foot-long highly radioactive hot cell, where no humans will be allowed.
Once inside the facility, the crane will be able to lift 30 tons, perform maintenance about 100 times a day and operate 1,000 pieces of equipment.
"It actually has an arm on it that operates very similar to a human arm. We call it a manipulator and that manipulator has full reach to the walls of the hot cell," says Ty Troutman, Project Manager.
Hanford workers have been preparing for the past four months. They say it's one of the most important pieces for the Vit Plant.
