YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for a missing man who may have fallen into the Roza canal.

Deputies say around midnight Monday, 22 year old Miguel Angel Lopez-Margarito was intoxicated and made suicidal statements at a mobile home park at 710 State Route 821, where he eventually left barefoot.

When deputies arrived, Lopez-Margarito's family was already following his footprints in the snow. The family had to stop the search when they reached the Roza canal. Deputies continued the search and followed the footprints to a fence crossing the canal bank. They believe the he tried to swing around the end of the fence when he slid into the fast flowing water.

Swift Water Rescue teams were called and a search began along the bank of the canal, but crews were unable to find the missing man. They are not sure if he was able to make it out.

In the meantime, the Bureau of Reclamation has stopped the flow of water above the site. The water is expected to be at its lowest point around 3 PM Monday, allowing searchers to move safely through the canal water.

Deputies say the 23 year old was visiting the area from Lake Stevens, in search of a job.
