Yakima remembers those who died homeless

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash- Organizations that serve the homeless gathered Monday in Yakima for the Sixth Annual Homeless Person's Memorial Day.  At Millennium Plaza in downtown Yakima about 55 people turned out for the vigil.

Yakima is one of 100 cities in the country that take part in this memorial.  People here are paying their respects to the 21 men and 5 women who died homeless in Yakima County this year.

Many homeless die from exposure to the elements.  Extreme Weather Shelters are open in Yakima to provide emergency overnight shelter for the homeless.  However according to Sunrise Outreach, the extreme weather shelters in Yakima are passed capacity.  They are in need of more volunteers to open another shelter. Contact them at http://www.sunriseoutreachcenter.com for more information.
