WHITE SWAN, Wash. -- Families in need from all across Yakima County stopped by the White Swan Pizza Deli, Wednesday to pick up their early Christmas presents.
More than a thousand people showed up for the annual "Wheeler Family Christmas" on Birch Avenue. The line went all the way from the back door of the deli to down the end of the side street.
The Wheeler family purchased hundreds of new toys for the kids, plus coats and bicycles.
Wednesday's event also helped parents like White Swan resident Nelson Frank, who says he was recently laid off from work. "Well, we have six kids, that's a big help there in itself. You know, a little bit tighter on the money from lack of work and stuff like that," said Frank.
The Wheeler family has been putting on their Christmas event in White Swan for over 20 years.
Kamiakin Wheeler says his family is proud of this tradition. "I've seen a lot of little kids walk out of here happy. That's what this is all about. It's about making the children happy, making the community happy, and making a stronger community altogether," added Wheeler.
