Yakima hospice close to $1 million goal

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Fundraising efforts to build a new hospice in Yakima are close to reaching a goal of a million dollars.

Donations have been pouring in for the Cottage in the Meadows capital campaign through Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital's Memorial Foundation.

Cottage in the Meadows is a 20 bed hospice facility that will be built across from Randall Park on 48th Avenue.

The Memorial Foundation had received $1 million in matching funds from Art and Joanne Hall's Fairweather Foundation.

Dr. Tim Melhorn of the capital campaign steering committee says they're already at 95-percent to reaching their year-end goal of $1 million. "and the knowledge of that grant and the ability to leverage one's gift, and have it match dollar for dollar has been a tremendous incentive," added Dr. Melhorn.

Once the capital campaign reaches their match fund goal, Dr. Melhorn says they'll need to raise another $500,000 so they can begin on the construction phase of the facility. He says construction could start as early as 2011.
