The Portland Winterhawks (25-11-0-3) dropped a 5-1 decision on the road against the Tri-City Americans (21-11-1-1) in Kennewick, WA Wednesday.
Tri-Cities opened the scoring 11:12 into the first period on a power play goal by Adam Hughesman. Ty Rattie responded for Portland when he evened the game at the 13:07 mark with his 17th goal of the season to make it 1-1. But the Americans answered with goals by Zachary Yuen and Neal Prokop before the end of the period to take a 3-1 lead.
The Americans added two more goals in the second period on tallies by Drydn Dow and Brock Sutherland to take a 5-1 lead, after which Winterhawks netminder Keith Hamilton was replaced by Mac Carruth, who went the rest of the way.
Carruth turned away all 11 shots he faced in the second and third periods, as the game ended with a scoreless third period to give Tri-Cities the 5-1 win.
The Winterhawks fired 44 shots at Americans goaltender Drew Owsley, but he was up to the task, stopping 43.
