KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. -- A 58-year-old man is hospitalized after crashing his snowmobile into a tree near the Salmon La Sac Sno-Park.

Kittitas County sheriff's deputies and search and rescue personnel responded to the accident in the area of Gallagher Lake at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Deputies say the victim, Patrick Kirk, of Covington hit the tree at a high rate of speed while going down a steep mountain side. They say Kirk had severe injuries, lost consciousness and had briefly stopped breathing.

Rescuers say they reached the victim by snowmobile at 4:00 p.m. A helicopter from the King County Sheriff's Office arrived and hoisted Kirk from the scene. He was taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital, and later flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Deputies say Kirk was an experienced snowmobile rider, and say he was wearing a helmet and protective gear.

Kittitas County Sheriff's Office will look into whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the accident.

A spokesperson for Harborview tells KNDO, Kirk was in serious condition in the intensive care unit, as of noon Monday.
