New competency rules for Wash. nurses

Posted: Updated:

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A new Washington state law requires nurses to update their education and keep their nursing skills current.

The Department of Health says the law that took effect Jan. 1 affects about 100,000 nurses in the state.

Every three years, nurses must complete 531 hours of active practice, 45 hours of education and a self-assessment. Random audits will begin in 2014.
