KENNEWICK, Wash.- Boating accidents account for about 25 deaths a year in Washington state.
That's one of the reasons why in 2011, people under the age of 35 will have to take a safety class and earn a boater safety card to drive a boat.
By 2014, the course and card will be required for everyone under 60.
Rescue diver's say it's a small price to pay when you think of what's at stake.
Rescue Diver Mark Allen says, "You're in charge of your boat and you're in charge of the people on your boat. this lets you know what your responsibilities are."
Allen says the course teaches you common sense things like the importance of wearing a life jacket, and also what to do in case of an emergency.
