Mariners Caravan Making Stops Across Pacific Northwest

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The 2011 Seattle Mariners Caravan hit the road on Monday, January 10 with a stop in Yakima including a D.R.E.A.M. Team Assembly at Roosevelt Elementary School and a free public autograph session at the SunDome. Scheduled to appear are two of the Mariners promising young pitchers, Luke French and Shawn Kelley, long-time broadcaster Rick Rizzs, and the Mariner Moose.

Other stops on the first week of the Caravan include Moses Lake, Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Walla Walla and Tri-Cities.

Over a three-week period (January 10-28), the Caravan will make stops in 21 communities across the Pacific Northwest from Portland to Vancouver, B.C., Centralia to Spokane, and points in between.

At various stops on the Caravan, current and former Seattle Mariners players, announcers, and the Mariner Moose host assemblies for elementary school students and free public autograph and photo sessions.

The Yakima appearance includes a D.R.E.A.M. Team assembly for students at Roosevelt Elementary (120 N. 16th Ave.) from 1:45-2:15pm, and a free public autograph session at the Yakima Valley SunDome (1301 S. Fair Ave., Northwest Entrance), from 4:30-6pm. Autograph appearances are free and open to the general public. Attendees receive complimentary Mariners autographs, photos with the Mariner Moose, and the chance to win great prizes.

On Tuesday, January 11, the Caravan stops in Moses Lake for a skills clinic at Big Bend Community College, ATEC Building 1800 (7662 Chanute St.) from 4-5:30pm.

Starting pitcher Luke French split time between Seattle and Tacoma in 2010, where he was named Rainiers Pitcher of the Year by going 11-3 with a 2.94 ERA. French had 13 starts with the Mariners over three stints with the big club. With Seattle, French had 4 starts of at least 7.0 innings and one or fewer earned runs. French won his first Major League game of the season on August 6th vs. Kansas City.

Reliever Shawn Kelley is another of the Mariners promising young pitchers. In 2010, Kelley appeared in 22 games before being placed on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. He had season-ending partial Tommy John surgery on September 1. At the time of his injury, Kelley was 3-1 with a 3.96 ERA and held opponents scoreless in 15 of 22 appearances.

Rick Rizzs is entering his 26th season as a member of the Mariners broadcaster team.
