YAKIMA, Wash. -- Gov. Chris  Gregoire has ordered flags at all state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, in memory of U.S. Army Pfc. Robert J. Near, 21, of Granger.

Near was killed last week in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Relatives say Near was deployed in March and had been due to return home. He will be buried in Granger.

Near came to Granger from California at the age of 2. He graduated from Granger High and went on to train in the Idaho Job Corps. His family says Near had a "very positive attitude" and they are "very proud of the person he became."

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business on Tuesday, or first thing Wednesday morning. Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join in this recognition.
