People camping out to raise money for the homeless in the Tri-Cities
RICHLAND, Wash. -- Central United Protestant Church is doing the Second Annual Raise Your Tent Event.
They're trying to raise awareness about the problem in our area and raise money for The Union Gospel Mission in Pasco.
Campers are paying $50 for the Tent Space at Central Park, and lots are making donations.
The event runs January 14-January 22 and so far they have about 30 people registered, but not everyone actually braves the elements.
Dan Cook, the director says about a third of those who pay actually camp out and they normally don't spend the day in the tent, just the night.
"Most of them will start wandering in about 5,6, 7 PM, and then the rest of them come in around nine or ten..somewhere there," says Cook.
"Some are spending one night or some are spending 7 nights out here on the park. It really is not so that we feel like we are homeless, it's just to come out and raise awareness and funds for the homeless," says Mary Eggerbraten who is camping out for two out of seven days.
Last year, the Church raised more than $10,000 for the Union Gospel Mission in Pasco. To get involved call Ben Cook the coordinator at 509-460-9322 or the church at 509-943-1143.
