Dive Rescue suspends car search in Benton City

BENTON CITY, Wash. -- Columbia Basin Dive Rescue spent an hour Monday afternoon sifting through parts of the Yakima River,  looking for a possible car that went into the marina boat launch at Sportsman Park.

Corporal Mathew Clarke, with the Benton County Sheriff's Office says they received a call Sunday night around 8:30 PM from a concerned citizen who saw car taillights disappear towards the river.  That driver turned around to go back to Sportsman Park but did not see any cars  there.

Columbia Dive Rescue came out to check the waters Sunday but did not find anything in the dark.  Their efforts came back empty handed on Monday as well

"It was dark, swift moving water, there wasn't any report of any missing person, so the likelihood of somebody being in there is very low.  So it wasn't worth the risk to go in last night," says Scott Rubpelius with Columbia Basin Dive Rescue.

Rubpelius says the team will be doing training exercises in the Spring and if there is a car in the water, they will find it then.
