Benton County declares flood emergency

Posted: Updated:

The flooding situation continues to change in our area, and now in Benton County a flood emergency is officially declared.

Although it sounds a bit frightening, it will help with the situation because county agencies can now use emergency money.

Emergency service workers say the water is still rising on the Yakima River in Benton County, but allowing funds to be used will help workers get the needed goods and services to help people prevent flood damage in the area.

The Yakima River is expected to crest near 15.4 feet late Wednesday or early Thursday in West Richland and Benton City. Service workers are warning people, if they got wet during the January 2009 flood, they will probably see flooding again this time.

Sandbags will be available for people living in flood-prone areas.

You can pick up sandbags at Fire Station 410 in West Richland, Fire Station 210 in Benton City, or by calling this non-emergency number: (509) 628-2616.
