3 Officers injured by knife-wielding suspect

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Three officers were injured after attempting to stop a knife-wielding suspect outside the Kittitas County Corrections Center.

Operations Captain Dan Hansberry, with the Ellensburg Police Department, says a Cle Elum officer was leaving the Corrections Center at around 4:00 a.m. Saturday, when he noticed a male and female arguing. The officer contacted for Ellensburg police to respond.

Hansberry reported Kyle Stoddard, 21, of Cle Elum, aggressively charged towards the officer threatening to assault him with a knife. When the first responding Ellensburg police officer arrived Stoddard threw the knife to the ground.

As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, Hansberry says Stoddard physically resisted officers which resulted in minor injuries to the Cle Elum and Ellensburg police officers, the county corrections officer and Stoddard. The four were treated and released at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital.

Cle Elum-Roslyn police chief Scott Ferguson told KNDO that the injuries were not caused by the knife, since the suspect had already dropped the weapon on the ground.

Stoddard was booked into KCCC on felony assault charges against the officers and resisting arrest. His bail has been set at $100,000.
