YPD officer on administrative leave after killing a stabbing suspect
YAKIMA, Wash- During a Monday morning press conference, the Yakima Police Department released more information on the people and circumstances that left one dead, another in the hospital, and a Yakima Police Officer under investigation.
Julio Zamora-Cortes is in stable condition tonight after being stabbed 159 times. Zamora says he was sleep in bed Sunday morning when Yeuri Acevedo- Cisneros began stabbing him. The two struggled into the street as Zamora-Cortes tried to escape. Some neighbors tried to stop Acevedo-Cisneros with baseball bats, but he continued stabbing. Witnesses told KNDO that said he seemed to be mentally disturbed, making comments like "Jesus told me to kill him".
Police and witnesses say that when officer Joel Hansen arrived on the scene he yelled out warnings to Acevedo before shooting him twice and killing him. The patrol car's video camera is said to have recorded it all.
Officer Hansen is on administrative leave while YPD completes an internal investigation. Hansen has been with the department for four years. This is the first report of him firing his weapon on duty.
Regardless of whether the shooting is ruled justifiable or criminal, Yeuri Acevedo is the City of Yakima and Yakima County's first homicide of the year. The Yakima County coroner determined that it was in fact the gunshot wounds that killed him, not the injuries from the baseball bats.
