YAKIMA, Wash. – The 18th annual Sealant Day at Yakima Valley Community College on Saturday provided children between the ages of 6 and 21 free dental care who might otherwise never see a dentist.
The yearly tradition is a community service project between public and private organizations. Supplies are donated and local dentists and YVCC students give free sealants, a dental exam, and fluoride treatment to patients.
"I think a lot of the issue with getting good dental care is getting the money," said Julie Harris, an organizer for the event. "The services are available but without money it's hard to access them."
Each year volunteers try to help 100 children from the community. Often the have to turn away families but this year turnout was lower than usual.
