Man shoots himself in the leg in elementary school parking lot
RICHLAND, Wash. -- Richland Police are piecing together the circumstances after a man shot himself in the leg Monday night.
Richland police say at about 8:45 p.m., the man was sitting in his pick-up in the parking lot at Badger Mountain Elementary School when a 40-caliber handgun he had accidentally went off, shooting him in the thigh.
The man was alone at the time of the shooting.
"The circumstances surrounding the discharge of the weapon at this time are unknown. We focused on providing first aid to the subject and getting him off to the hospital as quickly as possible," said Sgt. Darryl Judge with the Richland Police Department.
So far police haven't released the man's name, just that he's in his mid-40's.
Some things police are trying to figure out: Why the man had a weapon out on school grounds and whether it's his gun.
Police say if necessary, they'll send the information to the prosecutor for review.
