KENNEWICK, Wash.— Are you having trouble sticking to that New Year's Resolution? Maybe you wanted to lose weight or quit smoking. KNDU met with a hypnotherapist who claims his techniques may be able to break your habit.
About sixty people showed up to a hypnosis seminar at the Tri-Cities Cancer Center in Kennewick. The hypnotherapist says there are six elements necessary for permanent personality change.
1. You must have a desire to change. 2. Create a belief about the change maybe through affirmations. 3. Learn to identify yourself without the habit. 4. Determine why you should let it go. 5. Repeat. 6. Use self-talk to avoid old patterns.
The hypnotherapist says it typically takes about three sessions to break a habit. They can walk you through the process, but there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing someone to work with.
"Make sure that the person is actually registered with the state that way they at least have some kind of oversight. They are potentially certified by whoever trained them but not licensed. The state doesn't license hypnotherapists," says Cindy Miller, Community Educator.
