YAKIMA, Wash- Tim Kerns is Yakima's firefighter of the year. YFD honored him with the Rusty Hauber Award at Tuesday night's annual meeting.
Kerns was recognized in large because of his community involvement. He has helped organize events like the spaghetti feed, and adopt a family. Kerns says he feels giving back to the community is a big part of what it means to be a Yakima firefighter.
"It's good to be recognized but that's not what you do those things for. It's a pretty big honor around here and everybody here does something that could ear that award so it was pretty exciting", Kerns commented
On top of his community service, Kerns still squeezes in some time to fight fires. He has been with the department nearly seven years and is a driver for the new Tiller ladder truck
