YAKIMA, Wash. -- Washington State Patrol detectives Thursday arrested the driver in connection with last week's fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a 14-year-old Wapato girl.
Antonio Morfin, 21, of Yakima, was arrested after he turned himself into detectives at around 1:30 p.m., at the State Patrol headquarters office in Union Gap.
Troopers say Shaniah Jackson, 14, of Wapato was crossing Highway 97 with her 16-year-old friend, when Jackson was hit by a Toyota pickup. The accident happened on February 4. Trooper say the male friend received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center.
Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers located the Toyota pickup about one mile from Highway 97, about an hour after the accident. Detectives were later tipped off by several people on the identity of the driver.
Morfin was booked into the Yakima County jail. He faces one count each of felony hit and run involving a death and hit and run involving an injury charges.
