KENNEWICK, Wash. - There's a new American flag flying over the Blue Bridge tonight. It was removed two weeks ago and Thursday the Washington Department of Transportation crews repaired the flag-pole pulley system and put up the new flag.
Crews say they replace the flag twice a year. They then hand it over to the local chapter of the American Legion. Vietnam veteran, Lyle Gilk, says it's important to replace worn out flags. "The flag represents our country and it signifies what we stand for. It signifies that we are free and signifies that we will protect that with all our means available to us," said Gilk.
DOT workers say they generally replace the flag every six months. They say high winds, rain and snow wear out a flag pretty quickly.
