The stage is set for an interesting postseason in local high school basketball, as teams head into the district tournaments before the state playoffs.
First, let's explain the 4A boys bracket. Ferris, undefeated in the Greater Spokane League this year, gets a bye in the first round and will wait to play the winner between Rogers and Mead. Meanwhile, Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep will tangle on Feb. 15. The tournament will, in fact, have a loser's bracket, meaning a loser in the first round could make it to the state regionals IF they win their next two games.
The same holds true for the girls, except that Gonzaga Prep holds the top seed, followed by Lewis & Clark and Mead. Ferris and Central Valley will meet in the play-in game for the right to play the Bullpups.
Two 4A teams – boys and girls – will make the state regional tournament in Richland.
In the 3A ranks, only one team advances to the state regional, but every team – four of them in all – have a shot at making the state's big dance. On the boys side, Shadle will play Mt. Spokane in a first round, loser-out game, while North Central will play UHigh. The loser between the Indians and Titans will then play the winner between Shadle and Mt. Spokane, with the winner of that advancing to play either North Central or UHigh.
Confusing as all get-out, right? Just be sure to download the files (at left) that show the brackets. It will make more sense that way – hopefully.
The girls district playoff is set up in an identical fashion.
