PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Winterhawks (37-16-0-3) dropped a 5-0 decision at home to the Tri-City Americans (34-14-2-1) Friday at the Memorial Coliseum in front of 6,352 fans.
The Americans scored the lone goal of the first period at the 8:35 mark when Adam Hughesman converted on a 5-on-3 Tri-Cities power play to make it 1-0.
Tri-Cities made it 2-0 when Patrick Holland scored 1:18 into the second period. They extended the lead to 3-0 at the 11:05 mark on a goal by Connor Rankin just as a Portland penalty was expiring, then made it 4-0 on a shot from the point by Brock Sutherland at 16:56.
At the 4:10 mark of the third period Tri-Cities' Kruise Reddick scored with a two-man advantage to make it 5-0, which would stand as the final.
Mac Carruth made 34 saves on 39 shots, while his counterpart Drew Owsley stopped all 30 shots the Winterhawks took.
