Yakima mayor says follow-through is key to secure needed funding
YAKIMA, Wash- Three Yakima city leaders are back in town after spending a week in Washington DC. The purpose of the trip was to find out how to get federal funding for crime fighting, gang prevention and policing, teen pregnancy prevention, and security. Mayor Micah Cawley says now that the meetings are done, it's up to the city to take the next step.
"Its follow-through, follow-through. We've been sending different emails back and forth between the different agencies. Budgets came out today for the fed. We're now kinda knowing how much grant money they have available and now it's a race to the finish line to who can get there and put in the best app. It's a race now to see who can put in the best application."
With the federal budget cuts announced today, there's less money available to communities than in past years. Cawley says the City and the County are applying together to increase their chances of getting a gang prevention grant.
