The Vancouver Giants snapped their 6 game regular season losing streak vs. the Tri-City Americans, defeating them 5-0 Sunday night at the Pacific Coliseum. Brendan Gallagher finished with 4 points, Mark Segal made 23 saves for his 5th shutout of the season, and Don Hay earned his 519th career victory to become the 3rd winningest head coach in WHL history, trailing on Ernie 'Punch' McLean and Ken Hodge.
Despite playing their 5th game in 7 days the Americans came out firing in the first, outshooting Vancouver 11-4 in the opening frame. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net, leaving it 0-0 through 20 minutes.
Looking to rebound from a disappointing opening period the Giants came out with better energy in the second stanza and eventually were rewarded with the first goal of the game. Brendan Gallagher beat Chris Driedger for his 42nd of the season, giving Vancouver a 1-0 lead after 40 mnutes.
In the third the Giants took over as Andrej Stastny and James Henry scored 13 seconds apart just 1:18 into the frame to put the home team up 3-0. Michael Burns added one on the power play for his 14th goal of the season and Gallagher rounded out the scoring with his 2nd of the game, 43rd of the year, and 4th point of the night to make it a 5-0 final. After making 11 saves in the first period, Mark Segal only needed to stop 12 the rest of the way to earn his 5th shutout of the year. It was Vancouver's first regular season win over the Americans since March 2009
