State patrol asks drivers to follow Move Over Law after trooper weekend accident
KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Washington State Patrol's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating an accident Sunday night involving a semi truck and patrol cruiser.
The semi struck the back of the cruiser at approximately 5:47 p.m. on US 395 at milepost 90 in Ritzville. Two state troopers were parked on the right northbound shoulder when the truck traveled across the edgeline. A 19 year veteran trooper from the Ritzville, Dean Burt, was severely injured and airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Troopers everywhere want to remind drivers to follow the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to move at least one lane over from where emergency vehicles are parked. "It affords us a little extra room on the side of the roadway. It also gives that driver some added time to respond to something in the event something maybe in the lane," says Lt. Roger Wilbur with WSP in Kennewick.
Wilbur also says one of his troopers was involved in an accident Saturday night at the intersection of US 395 and Hildebrand Blvd. He says a car rear ended Trooper Marty Finan, who wound up with whiplash.
The condition of Trooper Burt has not been released.
