HERMISTON, Ore. -- The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of nearly $100,000 worth of metal.
Since the beginning of the year, they have received 15 reports of copper wire and other metal stolen from farms and businesses throughout the county. Seven farms were targeted outside of Hermiston.
Sheriff John Trumbo says financial conditions are one reason for the rise in thefts, but that's not all, "and of course the people stealing this don't have gainful employment and I'm convinced 100 percent that the motivation behind these thefts is drugs."
Trumbo adds they've already made some arrests, and are keeping tabs on possible suspects.
Up in Grant County, a farmer held two men at gunpoint who were trying to steal his farm equipment.
