RICHLAND, WA-While Gordon Beecher sat in a management meeting at Richland City Hall, Kathy Beecher and others stood outside, ready to surprise him as this year's volunteer of the year for the United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties.
What Kathy Beecher didn't know at the time, she too was going to share the honors with her husband.
The Beechers have been actively involved in the local United Way for more than a dozen years. Gordon Beecher says for all the time they've put into the community, they've gotten back tenfold.
"It's easy in the Tri Cities to volunteer. We've lived all over the United States and been in a bunch of United Way campaigns, but this community is the most pro-active in giving."
The Beechers are involved in several United Way programs, including Babies Can't Wait, and Prepared By Twenty. Kathy Beecher also volunteers as a career guidance counselor for college-bound students.
