Dept. of Revenue warns businesses of phone call scam
The Department of Revenue says a telephone scam from a few years is back and once again targeting businesses.
Targets of the scam receive an automated call asking them to dial an 800-number and then make an international call. The business ends up with a $7 charge for the last call. The scam claims to be following up on a tax inquiry.
Businesses may receive calls from the department regarding state tax returns. The scam gives out this incorrect number to call, 1-800-631-4228. The international number is 10-15-15-8000.
The correct number is similar but has a "0" in place of the first "2" in the number. You should call 1-800-631-4028 and should not be asked to make an international call.
The people behind this scam were never caught when it was first introduced because they were in foreign countries, according to the department.
