Central Falls 10-5, 4-3 to Conference-Leading Saints

LACEY, Wash. (Mar. 27) -- Freshman Clifton Coulter (Camas, Wash./Union HS) went 4 for 5 in the first game, and eight of Central Washington University's nine starters had at least one hit in game two, but the Wildcats were unable to defeat host Saint Martin's University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference baseball action on Sunday at the Regional Athletic Complex. Game scores were 10-5 and 4-3.

With the losses, Central fell to 6-16 overall including 1-11 in GNAC games. Saint Martin's extended its lead in the conference standings to three games over idle Western Oregon, as the Saints have won 13 of 16 conference contests and are 16-13 overall.

Coulter's second multi-hit game of the season in game one came in his fifth collegiate start. He had singles in the second, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings, with the last of those four driving home the game's final run. However, he was the lone CWU starter in the nightcap not to get a hit as the Wildcats totaled 10 hits in the seven-inning second game.

CWU senior Jake Millbauer (Kennewick, Wash./Kamiakin HS) had a rough outing in the opener. The right-hander, who fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss, surrendered nine hits and six runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Three relievers combined to go the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned).

The Wildcats scored single runs in the third, fourth, and ninth, with a two spot in the top of the seventh inning of the opener. Central took advantage of four Saint Martin's errors by scoring an unearned tally in the seventh, while junior shortstop Derrick Webb (Ephrata, Wash.) also homered in the seventh for his second round-tripper of the year.

Saint Martin's, which totaled 14 hits in the opener, saw the top five positions in its lineup collect 12 hits. The Saints also stole five bases in the contest, and starting pitcher Casey Mitchell earned the win to improve to 4-1 on the year.

In the series finale, Central rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, but three consecutive baserunners from a hit, a walk, and an error allowed Saint Martin's to take the 4-3 win and complete the series sweep.

The Wildcats again scored first, going ahead 1-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly by senior Kelly Gau (Woodinville, Wash.). Saint Martin's countered two innings later by scoring three runs, as two CWU errors, combined with three Saints hits, allowed the hosts to take a 3-1 lead. Only one of the three runs in the inning was earned.

Central scored once each in the sixth and seventh, scoring on a RBI single by senior Kris Henderson (Liberty Lake, Wash./Central Valley HS) in the sixth and tying the game on an error in the seventh. The Wildcats had the go-ahead run on third base -- and two runners in scoring position -- with one out in the seventh, but were unable to take the lead.

The Wildcats had a 10-7 hitting advantage, but five errors led to a total of three unearned runs for Saint Martin's. Junior Brady Kincannon (Federal Way, Wash./Decatur HS) and sophomore Jimmy Ryerson (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt HS) were both 2 for 3 in the contest.

Junior Kyle Long (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway HS) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, falling to 1-5 on the season.

Central Washington will return home next weekend for a four-game series against Montana State University Billings on Friday (Apr. 1) and Saturday (Apr. 2).
