WELLPINIT, Wash. - The Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wellpinit suffered major damaged after a fire ripped through the interior Saturday afternoon. According to authorities the fire started in a back room shortly after the priest left for the day. Volunteer firefighters from Wellpinit, as well as Stevens County and Ford firefighters quickly responded to the scene and extinguished the flames.
Officials say that despite the fact that the building remains standing, the inside is a total loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
