45th Running of the Apple Cup in YakimaPosted: Updated:
Yakima Speedway opened for the 2011 season hosting the 45th Annual Apple Cup presented by Columbia Asphalt featuring the Pure Stocks, Sportsman, West Coast Promoters Street Stocks, INEX Legends and the Super Late Models.
In the Pure Stock Division Rob Allen set fast time, Harold Emmons won the B Trophy Dash and Greg Gargett won the A Trophy Dash. In the Sportsman Division 15 year old Rookie Kyler Conduff set fast time and broke track record with a 23.172. Chris Richter Jr won the B Trophy Dash and Mike Hill won the A Trophy Dash.
The West Coast Promoters Street Stock Series made their series debut in the first of 8 scheduled races in the 2011 season. Mel Patnode captured fast time with a 21.049, Ben St. Mary won the B Trophy Dash and Mike VanAmburg won the A Trophy Dash.
The best drivers on the west coast put on an exciting qualifying display when 4 drivers back to back each broke the track record. Wenatchee's Shane Mitchell set fast time and claimed the new track record with a fast 18.623. Jake Bisset won the B Trophy Dash and Erick Hargraves won the A Trophy Dash.
To set the field for the 125 lap Columbia Asphalt Super Late Model main event, all cars raced qualifying races. In the first 25 lap qualifying race Shane Mitchell started on the pole and led all 25 laps to claim the inside pole for Sunday's main event. In the second 25 lap qualifying race, 2010 Season Champion Owen Riddle started on the pole and led the first 22 laps but Mike Longton would make the pass on lap 23 to take the lead and claim the outside pole for the Main Event.
