Sunnyside canal crash: 2nd person may be involved

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- The woman whose body was found after her car crashed into an irrigation canal has been identified.

The Yakima County coroner identified the driver as Maria Garibaldo of Sunnyside. Deputies responded to the crash at around 2 a.m. Saturday, near the intersection of Van Belle and Chute Roads.

Witnesses told deputies the car first crashed while going down a farm road after missing turn, then went through a field before crashing into a canal.

Chief Stew Graham says they're looking into whether a second person may have been in the car with Garibaldo when it crashed. "And so we're trying to figure that out all to see if we can identify that person, or actually confirm if there was someone else and identify that person."

Deputies believe Garibaldo was able to get out of the car after crashing it into the canal, but she later died from her injuries at the crash site.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death.
