YAKIMA, Wash- Yakima County's unemployment rate has dropped, but only slightly. That could be why thousands of people turned out for the annual WorkSource job fair in Yakima Tuesday. This year event drew a record number of job seekers about 2,200 that's double last year's turnout.
Organizers say a couple of things may have contributed to the high volume of job seekers. First, they marketed the event differently this year, giving it more publicity. They also believe the economy played a role. Yakima's economic recovery continues to lag behind the rest of the country. About 70 businesses participated in the event from Avon to GE Aviation. WorkSource estimates 500 jobs were being offered.
"This year we're actually seeing more actual job need, more postings and people who are hiring especially in the manufacturing sector."
