SUNNYSIDE, Wash. – Washington State Patrol is investigating a Saturday night shooting by a Sunnyside Police officer that killed a man after he opened fire on officers.

Sunnyside Police pulled over a car on 6th and Edison around 8:45 p.m. after it had been involved in a shooting moments before, according to Chief Phil Schenck.

While officers tried to remove the people inside the car, one of them took out a handgun and fired at the officers, Schenck said in a news release. Officers returned fire and the gunman was shot and killed. None of the officers were hit by gunfire.

The police department requested WSP to conduct the investigation and also received assistance from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Granger Police, and Grandview Police.

The officer involved with the shooting will be on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard department policy. Names of the officers involved are not being released at this time.

The gunman has yet to be identified, an autopsy by the Yakima County Coroner is scheduled for Monday morning.
