Petrich Named GNAC Player of the Year

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. (May 10) -- Central Washington University senior shortstop Samantha Petrich (Chehalis, Wash./W.F. West HS) has been named the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball Player of the Year, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Petrich was one of four Wildcats named to the all-conference first team. Joining her were senior third baseman Kelsey Haupert (Olympia, Wash./Black Hills HS), senior pitcher Lauren Hadenfeld (Vancouver, Wash./Evergreen HS), and sophomore designated player Carrina Wagner (Tacoma, Wash./Spanaway Lake HS).

Four other CWU players also received all-conference recognition, as junior second baseman Molly Coppinger (Belfair, Wash./North Mason HS) and senior outfielder Keilani Cruz (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS) were second-team selections while sophomore catcher Elena Carter (Olympia, Wash./Black Hills HS) and junior first baseman Liz Jusko (Snohomish, Wash.) were named to the honorable mention all-GNAC squad.

Petrich enters the postseason ranking among the NCAA Division II national leaders in several statistical categories, including on-base percentage (third, .609), batting average (seventh, .484), walks (seventh, 0.84 per game), slugging percentage (eighth, .910), and runs scored (14th, 1.26 per game). She led the GNAC during the regular season in both batting average and on-base percentage, posting a sizzling .506 average in conference play.

Haupert was the lone unanimous first-team selection among the Wildcats' honorees. She is currently the national leader in home runs with a school- and GNAC-record 20 this season, driving in 52 while batting .452 with a conference-best .952 slugging percentage. She set a conference record with hits in 10 consecutive official at-bats earlier this month.

Hadenfeld was one of two pitchers named to the all-conference first team, carrying the Wildcats from the pitching circle for the second straight year. After earning GNAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2010, Hadenfeld finished the 2011 regular season with a 23-9 record and 2.18 earned-run average, including a 19-6 record and league-best 2.00 ERA in conference games.

Wagner earned her first career all-conference honor after batting .331 with 14 home runs and 37 runs batted in as Central's designated player in 2011. The sophomore joined teammates Petrich and Haupert with double-digit home run totals in helping lead the Wildcats to the national lead in round-trippers this season with 1.49 per game (70 total).

Also earning specialty honors in a vote of conference coaches were Erika Quint of Western Washington as the Pitcher of the Year, Lacey McGladrey of Saint Martin's as the Freshman of the Year, and Meg Harasymczuk of Montana State Billings as the Newcomer of the Year. Western Washington's Amy Suiter was named GNAC Coach of the Year.

With a 33-14 overall record, Central Washington will travel to Chico, Calif., this weekend for the 2011 NCAA Division II West Regional. The Wildcats, seeded eighth, will open the double-elimination tournament against the region's top seed, UC San Diego (36-13) on Friday (May 13) at noon.
