The b'LAWg - Banks Lake June Bass Report From Dave Law

Posted: Updated:

Banks Lake! Dad and I hooked into some nice Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass there last week. The weather was great, 75-80°, with passing high clouds, and very little wind. Here's a little background information…This large, manmade lake starts near the Grand Coulee Dam (which pumps water up 800ft into the lake) and runs southward 29 miles to Coulee City where another dam is located. Since the flow is controlled, the lake levels stay pretty consistent year round and offers great opportunities for premium Bass, Walleye and Carp fishing. There are some "big" Trout in these waters, but hookups are few and far between. Steamboat Rock State Park is roughly 6 miles from the north end (and the north end is probably the most popular end of the lake to fish). I like to launch the boat at Northpoint and spend a little time in Devil's Punchbowl (between the highway and Steamboat Rock). Good news for bank fishermen! There are several spots/pullovers right next to the road with easy access to the water.

Observations & Tips: Warming water temperatures are key this time of year for catching those bass as they head for the shallows and begin to make their beds. On our trip, it was 70° in the shallows and 65° in the deeper water. The bass we caught had come out of the deeper water and held just shy of the shallows or had recently moved into the reeds for the spawn (The eggs on one largemouth we brought home for the grill were still a bit immature). I believe the next 2 weeks should be pretty awesome! Try flipping a Senko worm in the weedy waters or in more open water, try jigging a chocolate, green, or clear colored grub tipped with a section of nightcrawler. As far as worm colors…Watermelon (green), Oxblood Indigo (brown), Smoke (gray), and Pumpkin (orange) all seemed to produce. It's trial and error until you find what they're consistently hitting that day. So, come prepared with a decent color selection. Check out this video for a taste of Banks Lake and a 15 second "Yamasenko" tutorial. http://www.khq.com/category/211053/fishing-report (The title reads "Dave talks about Bassing at Banks Lake). BTW, there also seemed to be a "bite on" during the afternoon around 3pm-4pm. Hmmm, go figure?

PS: A friend of mine told me the Walleye are also biting pretty steady. I saw a nice photo of one, and he was pretty excited about the one that got away…."10 pounder?"…Now, I'm excited! Ha! E-mail your fish shots and reports to dave.law@KHQ.com
