You may remember Initiative 1100, which pushed to privatize the state liquor industry. It failed but now, a new similar measure is on the table hoping to smooth out the bumps of the last one.
The message is similar, privatize and modernize liquor in our state. But the new liquor initiative avoids several weak spots found in last year's I-1100 that got defeated.
The campaign last year began with Costco Wholesale and was even known as the "Costco Initiative." This new measure already has a wider backing of stores.
Also last go-around the city and county governments could have lost a lot of money, but the new version would share some revenue from liquor sales with them.
This year's measure also allows retailers to work directly with wineries and distillers but keeps existing rules in place for beer.
The initiative campaign needs over 240,000 valid signatures by July 8th to move on.
The general election is November 8th this year.
