Walla Walla and Connell Bring Home State Softball Titles
Walla Walla softball entered Saturday with a chance to do something no school has done in the Big 9. Win a state title in the 4A ranks. The Blue Devils did just that with a 1-0 victory of Marysville-Pilchuck in the 4A state title game. Alyson Ambler had the game winning solo homerun, and was also the game winning pitcher for the Blue Devils. Even more impressive than Ambler's performance... Walla Walla's pitchers in Ambler and Hope Clicker. Each pitched two complete games in the state tournament, and did not yield a run.
In the 1A ranks Connell defeated Onalaska 9-4 to claim its 6th state title in school history. The school's first since 1997. Sophomore pitcher and third baseman Ashley Thompson pitched brilliantly striking out ten batters. Thompson also doing the job at the dish going 3-4 with a triple, double, and 3 RBIs. Other Eagles contributing at the dish would be junior Shanika Sawyer who went 3-4 at the plate like Thompson. Also chipping in would be senior Kayla Bjorge who went 2-3 in the championship game.
Ellensburg in the 2A state title game fell one run short, losing to Sequim 2-1. Junior Cassie Sharon had a solo blast for the Bulldogs in the loss.
