Toppenish teens crash as DUI patrols increase over holiday weekend
TOPPENISH, Wash. - Two teenagers were hospitalized after a crash in Toppenish early Saturday morning. It happened just after midnight on Cheyne Road, right after crossing Yakima Valley Highway. The car rolled over twice before ending up in a field.
Washington State Patrol says, driver 19 year old Juan Mares lost control of the wheel. He and his 15 year old female passenger were taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Troopers say drugs or alcohol may have played a factor in the crash. That is why State Patrol was out in full effect this holiday, which is historically one of the worst for DUI arrests.
State Trooper, John Berends says, "You just can't do it. People get hurt and unfortunately they still do it. That's why we're out there patrolling and we do have extra patrols out this weekend because it's a three day weekend."
As of Saturday evening, WSP says they have made 11 DUI arrests in the Yakima area, 5 in the Tri-Cities, 7 in Sunnyside and none in Walla Walla.
