He's a legend at Marcus Whitman Elementary, but soon, The building's foreman Ken Miller will retire after 40 years of service.

Before the walls of Marcus Whitman Elementary echo with student chatter in mornings, you can find Ken Miller working hard.

"I enjoy what I do," Ken says as he starts his morning routine at 3am.

He found a job as a building foreman. It was the only one he applied to... his whole life.  40 years later, he jokes, as he looks back fondly at his time here. First as a student, and then as an employee.

"Some of the kids, their parents come back. Oh you're still here? They ask. "Yeah..." he laughs in response.

"Everybody knows Mr. Ken. It's wonderful working with him and the kids love him," secretary Sandy Crane

"I just enjoy the kids. They're my teachers and my kids," Ken says with a smile.

And it's why Ken says it's difficult to hang up his hat. He adds, there's a simple answer as to what's kept him here for four decades.

"Enjoy what you're doing. That's about the basics."
