UNION GAP, Wash.--The Valley Mall Boulevard construction project will be completed in late September.
Between the lane closures on Interstate 82 in both directions, the Main Street paving project, and Valley Mall Boulevard being reduced to a single lane at times, people are finding it difficult to stay away from heavy traffic areas. A round-a-bout is replacing a signal light at Rudkin Rd. and E. Valley Mall Blvd. to help improve traffic flow through the intersection and for motorists entering and exiting the freeway.
Department of Transportation officials are happy say they will finish the paving on Main St. this week, and they remind drivers of the long term benefits of this project.
"You're able to go through there and reduce that delay," says Bill Preston, who is the project engineer in charge. "It also improves safety by reducing the severity of the collisions that occur. With that safety and congestion improvement people will be better able to access the area down here."
The DOT says that so far safety in the construction zones hasn't been an issue. But I-82 continues to have lane closures with enforced and reduced speeds in both directions.
