State says teacher acquitted of sex with a student shouldn't be teaching

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.- The state superintendent's office wants to revoke an East Valley High School P.E. teacher's teaching certificate.  Last week the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction completed their investigation into Michele Taylor.  Friday they mailed her their decision to revoke her teaching certificate.

Taylor was cleared last year of criminal charges of having sex with a student and sending him and another student sexual text messages.

However she did admit to texting the students for other reasons.

"One of the conditions of certification is that he or she must be of good moral character and must adhere to a code of conduct. We have to be sure that they're not going to hurt our children," says Nathan Olson, media manager for the OSPI.

Taylor can appeal OPSI's proposal. If she does lose her teaching certificate she can re-apply after one year.   However OSPI says that in the last 10 years, only one teacher has gotten their certificate back after losing it and that was for a case of forgery.
