KENNEWICK, Wash.- Lots of people will be heading to the Columbia and Yakima rivers to enjoy the 4th of July weekend. Lifeguards say they want to remind people that drinking and swimming doesn't mix.
Alcohol use is involved in up to half of adolescent and adult drowning deaths. It can effect balance, coordination, and can lead to poor decisions, like cliff jumping.
"You never know what's down there. Big rocks and debris can move around it's really unsafe," says Ryanne Gerry.
Lifeguards say if you're going to be around the fast moving and cold rivers wear life jackets, and use common sense.
