Firefighters stop a brush fire from getting out of control
KENNEWICK, Wash.- Benton County Firefighters say they put out a five acre blaze before it could get much bigger early Tuesday.
They believe fireworks started the fire.
The flames started just west of the intersection of County Road 397 and Olympia Street.
They say it took them only a half hour to contain the fire, but say if they had gotten there any later, it could have grown out of control.
"Well we stopped it at about 5 acres, but I think it had the potential to be a couple hundred acres if we hadn't caught it as fast as we did," says Battalion Chief Brett Knapp of Benton County Fire District 1.
Firefighters say if the fire had started only a little later in the day, the conditions would've been drier and the fire could've spread faster and caused more damage.
