Federal help for WA homeowners facing foreclosure

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Homeowners in Washington state who are facing foreclosure can now get some extra help from the federal government.  The Department of Housing and Urban Development has $1 million to assist homeowners through the Emergency Homeowner's Loan Program (EHLP).

You could get up to $50,000 towards past due mortgages and to help with future payments, but you have to meet a few requirements.  Aaron Horvath, President of HomeOwnership.org, explains, "People who have experienced a hardship due to unemployment or due to reduction in income, and that they're still in the home, and the homeowner would have to be at least 3 months behind on their mortgage as of June 1st."

The money is for people in Washington and about 30 other states. Homeowners in Oregon aren't eligible.

The deadline to apply is July 22nd. Click here to see if you qualify.
