Many people would think that a police officer is exposed to the most violence on the job. Seattle radio station KUOW-FM found that health care workers deal with six times more violence than the state average. Caregivers that work in emergency rooms and psychiatric wards are assaulted more often than other nurses.
We put a poll on our Facebook pages and a lot of people thought corrections officers have the most dangerous jobs. Another popular choice was a police officer. Those we talked with today understood the dangers involved in the medical field.
Richland Police Captain Mike Cobb says "I think a lot of the health care professionals themselves deal with a lot of people in crisis. They deal with a lot of people in pain. They're not seeing people at their best and so they fall victim essentially to a lot of assaults by patient care."
The most violent place to work in the state is at Western State Hospital in Lakewood where criminal defendants are taken if they are incompetent and cannot be tried in court. Last year 313 assaults were reported at Western State.
