PASCO, Wash. -- The Tri-City Dust Devils defeated the visiting Eugene Emeralds 4-0 Wednesday night, giving Eugene their fifth loss and giving the Dust Devils their second shutout of the season. Tri-City improved its record to .500 at 13-13 on the year and drew them even with the Spokane Indians for second place in the Northwest League East Division standings.
Dust Devils (13-13) starter Christian Bergman (2-2) earned his second win of the season in outstanding fashion, working 5 2/3 shutout innings. In his sixth start of the season he allowed just two hits while striking out six and walking one. Relievers Rafael Suarez and Kenneth Roberts combined to shut out Eugene over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Emeralds (21-5) starting pitcher John Barbato (1-1) took his first professional loss of his career, allowing three runs in his four innings on the mound. He scattered seven Dust Devil hits over those four innings and now has a 4.70 earned run average.
Tri-City totaled 10 hits on the night, with seven of the nine Dust Devils in the lineup getting hits. Infielder Tim Smalling, catcher Ryan Casteel and outfielder Jared Simon each had two hits on the night, leading the team. Left fielder Tyler Massey continued his hot hitting, driving in two runs and improving his season batting average to .310.
Game two of five between the Dust Devils and Emeralds is Thursday night at Gesa Stadium, with first pitch at 7:15 p.m. Thursday night at the ballpark will also feature the Dash for Cash, presented by Wildhorse Resort and Casino, with fans in attendance given the chance to win cash! Dust Devils' righty Vianney Mayo will get the start and right-hander Matt Andriese will oppose him for the Emeralds.
