YAKIMA, Wash.-- City of Yakima leaders say they are missing out on funding. The state and city population numbers do not match.
In fact, Yakima is the most undercounted city in Washington. 2010 census numbers show a city population of 91,067. However, the State Office of Financial Management shows the population as 85,040.
"It's the basis for the distribution of tax revenue from both the state and the federal government, and so as your population goes up, you are bringing more of the taxpayer's dollars back into our community," City Supervising Planner Bruce Benson says.
"We did some reductions last year because we didn't have the revenue," Accounting and Budget Deputy Director Cindy Epperson says.
That potential revenue reaches almost $210,000 for last year alone. It is money the city could use to help balance the budget.
